Air Fryer Sweet Potato Chips are fried the healthy way. Less than 30 minutes for a handful of spicy chips. Vegan, Paleo, Whole30 and a delicious side dish, snack or appetizer.

This recipe is actually for fried sweet potatoes but they are done in the air fryer so that the fat content is much lower. You still need to use a touch of oil but not much.

They'll cook without the oil but they don't get crispy as they do with oil and the seasoningsstick much much better too.

Sweet potatoes are a gem of a vegetable. They have 114 calories per cup.

I calculated that a serving was ½ of a potato so even with all the seasonings the total come out to just a little over 100 calories per serving.

Sweetpotatoes aren't relegated to the holiday season anymore. You can buy them year round just like regular potatoes and they are just as versatile.

They also aren't potatoes even though they grow undergroundin exactly the same way. The tuberous roots have a long shelf life too.

The bright orange sweet potato is sweeter than the white ones and the contrast between sweet and spicy is fantastic. So sweet and spicy it is.

How to Prepare Sweet Potato Chips

Slice to the thickness that you like. I like to use a mandoline to get them nice and thin. Be careful!

I happen to have an OXO one becauseof a job that I did for them but there are many nice mandolines out there that don't cost a mint.

You can also slice them thicker but they will not be quite as crispy. They'll be more like the apple chips you buy in the store. Also delicious.

After the sweet potatoes are tossed in the oil sprinkle with the seasoning that has already been mixed. Toss again to evenly coat each slice.

Let the sweet potato slices touch each other in the bottom of the air fryer. They can even overlap a tad because there is more shrinking than you would think.

Quite a bit of water comes out of the sweet potatoes if they sit in the bowl a long time. If this happens to you don't retoss the sweet potatoes with the seasoning or it will wash off.

Sweet potato chips are easy to handle in the air fryer but they do need to be watched near the end of their 'frying' time.

If they look golden brown then they are done. I let a few go a minute longer and they were very brown and I'm sure they would burn very easily also.

Take them out of the air fryer and let them cool on a cooling rack. They will crisp up as they set.

  • If any water has come out of the sweet potatoes while they were sitting then you can drain that off.

  • Sprinkle the seasoning mix over the sweet potatoes and toss so that each slice has seasoning on it. They are lightly coated as in the photo above.

  • Lay sweet potatoes in a single layer in the air fryer touching or overlapping a tiny bit. If you have a stirring arm in your air fryer that has to be removed.

  • Air Fry at 180°C (356°F) for 6 to 9 minutes at depending on how thin your slices are. Mine was 9 minutes. Start to watch and don't burn. I actually have a T-Fal actifry and it is always set at 180°C and I can't change it. So 180°C it is (356°F 🙂

  • Shake the basket halfway through or lightly stir to get them off the bottom of the air fryer bottom.

  • When done remove chips to a cooling rack and let them cool. They will get crispier as they cool.

We love making our own chips. So many different flavour varieties you can do as well.

  5. Jen

I never thought to make sweet potato chips in my air fryer. I will have to try this recipe. It looks good. Thanks for sharing.

  6. Jackie Lowe

So, do you use the garlic powder that's in the ingredients list?? The instructions say chili powder, so which one is it? I don't want them tasting weird.

  7. Ginny McMeans

So very sorry Jackie! It's chili powder. I changed it on the recipe card and thanks for the heads up!

  8. Heather

I have an oven type air fryer and I am curious as to what temperature to cook these at.

  9. Ginny McMeans

Mine is always set at 180°. I think it will be easy to burn your chips much higher than that without watching very closely.

  10. Lin

The lowest temperature on my Ninja air fryer is 300 degrees. Should I use 300 degrees then?

  11. Ginny McMeans

Yes, go ahead and cook them at that temp but watch them closely and shake them more often. They will be done much faster too.

Wow, this recipe looks amazing!! I bet it tastes great too. I can’t believe that you can do the whole thing in the air fryer, wow, that is so easy! Cheers for sharing

  13. Trish

I can’t wait to try these. Is the 180 celsius?

  14. Ginny McMeans

Yes, celsius Trish. I'll add that C onto the recipe. Thank you.

  15. Laura Davidson

Can I substitute coconut sugar for the brown sugar?

  16. Ginny McMeans

Well, you can Laura but it won't work as well. Coconut sugar doesn't 'melt' and adhere as well as brown sugar but some should stick.

  17. Gina Marie

How thin did you slice them to get them crispy? I have a mandolin but I'm not sure how thin you mean when you say "thin"?

  18. Ginny McMeans

Can you look at the photos Gina? Besides the visuals with the finished product there is a photo of the raw sweet potatoes sliced and I think you can tell the thickness.

It’s been so hard for me to find a packaged sweet potato chip in the store that didn’t have ingredients that I didn’t want. Deciding to make homemade sweet potato chips was the best decision ever. This recipe was PERFECT! Seasoning is GREAT and directions are clear. This is the best homemade sweet potato chip recipe on the internet. Thank you so very much!

  20. April

Oh and I used coconut sugar and they came out just fine! 🙂

  21. Ginny McMeans

I'm so glad you found this recipe April. Thank you so much for your glowing review!

I used Splenda Brown sugar and a spicy seasoning and they were awesome!

  23. Lisa

Spicy Sweet Potato Chips Recipe: Air Fryer - Vegan In The Freezer (22)
Love these. Made them for super bowl Sunday!! I felt like I was cheating.

  24. Lisa

I this was my first air fryer recipe. The taste is awesome. I used half chilli, half paprika. Some of my chips were soggy when they came out though? Can anyone explain why? I didn’t shake them half way through the cook. Could that be the issue?

  25. Ginny McMeans

You have to soak the potatoes after they are sliced Lisa to get the starch out of the potatoes. Then pat dry. If you hand sliced them then there were thicker slices and maybe they were the ones that came out soggy. Also, if they weren't dispersed to different areas (shaking) that may be the cause too. Air fryers are hotter in some areas than others so those potatoes may not have cooked enough.

  26. Ciara

If you use smoked paprika on sweet potato chips they taste like bbq chips! It’s my fav alternative 😊

  27. Sonya Herford

Do you peel the sweet potatoes, or no?

  28. Yvette

Spicy Sweet Potato Chips Recipe: Air Fryer - Vegan In The Freezer (23)
Followed instructions but still had to bake afterwards in the oven and only the burn ones were crispy!

  29. Ginny McMeans

The sweet potatoes in this recipe were peeled. However, I don't always peel them, it really depends on the day / mood.

  30. Ginny McMeans

These always turn out perfect for me. Have you had issues with anything else in your air fryer? What model air fryer do you have?

  31. Heather

Would I be able to put them in the rotating basket that comes with the instant pot vortex plus air fryer?
