17 Vegan Canadian Recipes! (2024)

Today I've got 17 Vegan Canadian Recipes for you. Some of them are classic Canadian favourites that have been veganized, and others dishes aren't classics, but are "red and white"!

To make it simple, I've divided these recipes into two categories, savoury and sweet. Scroll through these 17 Vegan Canadian Recipes and let me know which one is your favourite.

Savoury

Vegan Poutine

Poutine is a dish that originated in Quebec. It's made up of French fries topped with cheese curds and gravy, and yes it is every bit as delicious as it sounds!

Vegan Cream Cheese

While cream cheese isn't necessarily very Canadian, bagels are. Montreal bagels are famous! They are hand-formed, cooked in a wood-fired oven, and are smaller, chewier, and sweeter than New York-style bagels. Try one of my 3 flavours of cream cheese on your bagels, and you can even top them with everything bagel seasoning.

Vegan Tourtiere

Tourtiere is a traditional French Canadian meat pie, and I made it all sorts of untraditional by making it vegan. Woohoo! This vegan tourtiere has a drool-worthy chewy juicy meaty filling wrapped in a flaky pie crust.

Vegan Lobster

Lobster and lobster rolls are very common dishes in Nova Scotia. Try my vegan lobster as is, or mix it with some vegan mayo, chopped celery, and a squeeze of lemon and put it on a roll to make your own homemade vegan lobster rolls.

Vegan Puff Pastry Wrapped Brie

This is not a traditional Canadian dish, but it is "red and white" making it a super cute app to share!

Vegan Split Pea Soup

Quebec-style pea soup. Try using yellow split peas in my recipe to make it more authentic.

Ginger Beef

Ginger beef was originated in Calgary, and it's traditionally made with beef (duh). My veganized version is made with dried and then rehydrated shiitake mushrooms which have an amazing juicy chew texture, similar to beef.

Vegan Caesar co*cktail

One of my all-time favourite co*cktails and perfect for the day after recovery. Similar to a Bloody Mary but a caesar traditionally is made with clam juice. Try my vegan version that offers all the tang and none of the clam.

Sweet

Vegan Nanaimo Bars

Go to any bakery or bake sale in Canada and you will see Nanaimo bars. Coconut chocolate base, with vanilla custard in the middle, topped with chocolate. Yum!

Vegan Butter Tarts

Another Canadian classic dessert. These tarts taste like pecan pie but are even better. Raisins are traditional (and I love them) but some people are anti-raisin in their butter tarts. You can go either way with this recipe!

Pancakes with Real Maple Syrup

While pancakes might not be originally from Canada, maple syrup sure is. Make sure you use 100% real maple syrup, the fake stuff will just not do!

Vegan Donuts

Tim Hortons is a chain restaurant coffee and donut shop that you will find at every turn in Canada. Try my glazed donuts witch have a similar flavour or you could use a donut hole pan to turn this recipe into "Timbits". Also, try my powdered donuts, double chocolate donuts, and classic glazed donuts.

Vegan Strawberry Cheesecake Popsicles

These popsicles aren't traditional, but the red and white make for the cutest Canadian-themed summer treat!

Vegan Red Velvet Cake

The red and white of this cake would make for the perfect Canadian-themed treat! Make sure you use enough food colouring to make that cake really red (and not brown).

Vegan Strawberry Oat Bars

For me, it isn't summer in Ontario until I stop at a roadside stand to buy some fresh strawberries. Making these strawberry oat bars is one of my favourite ways to enjoy strawberries.

Vegan Sheet Pan Pancakes

Nothing says Canada quite like real maple syrup! If you haven't tried making sheet pan pancakes, this is by far the easiest way to make a big batch of pancakes ready to be drizzled with maple syrup.

Vegan Strawberry Shortcake

Strawberry shortcakes are something I make almost every summer. I don't think it's a traditional Canadian dish, but for me, it always reminds me of home, and the red and white are just perfectly Canadian.

I hope you enjoy these 17 vegan Canadian recipes!

Bon Appetegan!

Sam Turnbull.

Such a great idea to veganize meals from your own culture! 🙂

I had to find vegan recipes from different countries for my vegan recipe randomizer. You made finding Canadian recipes very easy!

I ended up adding links to three of these recipes (lobster, poutine and tourtiere). It would have been difficult to find vegan versions traditional Canadian dishes elsewhere.

True story, when I lived in the States, a fellow Canadian invited my wife and I for dinner. She made rhubarb crisp for dinner and made us promise "You can never tell my mother I paid for rhubarb!"

        Haha, love that!
