Belgian Waffles Recipe - My Gorgeous Recipes (1)

It might sound like a cliché, but breakfast is indeed the most important meal of the day, and one that I can never skip. It fuels your body with the necessary energy to start your day right, and might I add, it sets you on a better mood to face whatever the day throws your way.

If you have kids, then breakfast becomes even more important. I can call myself lucky that my little ones are great eaters and are happy (most of the time anyways) with whatever I make for breakfast.

While I'm not even getting started on why sugary cereals devoid of any nutritional value are NOT a good breakfast for kids, these waffles do have added sugar, but nowhere near as much as a portion of cereal, plus they are more filling too.

Alternatively, if you want to omit added sugar altogether, I have this fabulous recipe for Healthy Banana Waffles (No Added Sugar) which are brilliant and equally delicious.

The waffle machine will end up being a very good investment in the long run, trust me on this. Oh, also worth mentioning that the waffles are ready in under 30 minutes.

  • egg
  • sugar - caster or granulated sugar

  • cinnamon
  • baking powder
  • vanilla extract

Step-by-step photos and instructions

  • Melt the butter and allow it to cool.
  • Sift the flour, and add it to a bowl together with baking powder, sugar, cinnamon and vanilla extract.
  • Beat the egg, pour in the milk and cooled butter, and mix well, then add the mixture to the bowl of flour.

You will get a smooth, sticky batter, so don't worry about the texture.

  • Heat up the waffle maker, add about 4 tablespoons of batter, depending on the size of the maker, and leave to cook for about 4-5 minutes.

It is important to spread the batter evenly to ensure that the waffles cook uniformly. Also, do not add too much batter at a time, as it will overflow and make a big mess.

What to serve with waffles

Waffles are extremely versatile, and they can be served with any kind of fruit either fresh, canned or dried to make them even more nutritional.

I served mine with honey, but maple syrup or any other syrup would be a fabulous addition too.

Also, spreads of any sorts can be added: peanut butter, cream cheese, butter and jam, cream and many more.

If you are serving the waffles as a dessert, rather than brunch, the choices are endless: ice creams of any kind, chocolate chips or flakes, chocolate dipping sauce just to name a few. What a gorgeous treat!
